  • Oshino Hakkai is one of the geographical elements that make up the greater area around Mt. Fuji, designated a World Heritage Site. Mt. Fuji’s accumulated snow pack seeps into the aquifer and over many years is gradually filtered before bubbling up in eight ponds: Deguchi-ike, Okama-ike, Sokonashi-ike, Choshi-ike, Waku-ike, Nigori-ike, Kagami-ike, and Shobu-ike, The Oshino Hakkai area comprising the ponds was also a pilgrimage site for the mountain-worshiping Fuji-ko faith, whose adherents were said to have purified their bodies with these spring waters.
