- In the early 15th century, King Shō Hashi of the Chūzan Kingdom unified the three realms of Okinawa, founding the Ryukyu Kingdom. Known as the“ Land of Courtesy,” it flourished through trade with China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, developing a unique culture of refined hospitality. At its heart were three forms of welcome cuisine, performing arts, and awamori.

- The pinnacle of royal hospitality was Ukanshin Cuisine, elaborate banquets once served to Chinese envoys, featuring locally adapted ingredients and exquisite presentation. Performing arts, from elegant Ryukyuan dance to kumi-odori, conveyed grace and respect, while awamori aged using the distinctive shitsugi method fostered warm connections beyond language.
- Though the kingdom fell in the late 19th century, the spirit of“ Shurei no Kokoro” lives on in Okinawan warmth, artistry, and taste.
